When I grow up

Hello all and welcome back to another one of my blogs. Sorry that it’s been a while since my last, I could come up with some excuse why I haven’t done one but I’ll be honest with you all; I literally had writers block.

I have sat down numerous times to write a new post, but nothing worth while has been coming to mind. When I said I would love suggestions on new blog posts I meant it haha!

Unless you’re a complete idiot who has shit for brains you’ve probably figured out what this blog will be about by reading the title. Buckle up my friends, you’re in for a wild ride.

When I was 5 I wanted to be a singer. I have been singing since before I could even form whole sentences, much to the disappointment of my family i’m sure. I started playing the piano when I was 5, and from that point on I knew there was a musical bone deep in my body thriving to be used. To this day performing music full time would be a dream come true, but by the age of about 8 I had realised it may not be a very obtainable dream. As the years went on, I began to set my heart on numerous “back up careers”.

I have always been quite nifty in the kitchen. Growing up I loveeeeed to bake and it became a bit of an obsession of mine. When I was 11 I applied for Junior Masterchef. Sadly I didn’t make it passed the first few rounds, but that didn’t dim my passion for cooking. My family and I visited Paris when I was 13, and after experiencing the incredible food and bakeries of France, I was hooked on the idea of becoming a Pastry Chef.

As years rolled on, I slowly lost that passion for cooking and baking I once had, and I decided to choose a career based on the strong aspects of my personality. I loved to argue, I loved being right, I had extreme confidence and I was quick on my feet. I could only think of one thing I wanted to become where I could harness all these abilities at once; I wanted to become a lawyer.

I started researching all different types of law and how to become a lawyer. My dream was slowly crushed when I realised I needed an OP of 5 to get into law after school. I was always a bright kid, but due to my ADHD I was never able to apply my intelligence in the classroom, and I knew an OP of 5 was probably not something I would be able to achieve. Unfortunately, 14 year old Brooke wasn’t aware that OP means fuck all and she tossed that dream into the gutter, the same place she thought her career was headed.

I decided to focus my energy on something a little more in my reach; I wanted to become a nurse. During year 11 I got pretty sick and had to take a whole term off school. Subsequently, I had to drop all my OP subjects and switch to the “easy” subjects. Lucky for me these were a breeze, and I was able to glide my way straight through to a Bachelor of Nursing at QUT straight out of school.

Schools put so much pressure on kids to get a good OP and practically convince them that without a good one, they won’t get into uni or be able to do their dream course. Pretty fucked huh?

Last year in August I got a full time job as an administration Assistant at a Law Firm because I needed to take a break from uni. During the last 11 months my passion for law has resurfaced, which is exactly why I have decided to enroll in a Bachelor of Laws starting 2018 at QUT.

It’s funny how things come full circle sometimes isn’t it?

For a long time I had no idea what I wanted to do. I had absolutely no faith in myself and I didn’t think I would ever amount to anything special. Damn, was I wrong. I now know that I am destined for something really great. I am what I decide to be, and I am as successful as I decide to make myself. Nobody is born great, they become great.

PS, I’ve been thinking about starting to do Vlogs on like a Youtube channel. What do you think? Let me know 🙂
